MAPPING OUT WEALTH AND POVERTY IN EGYPT.  BY AHMED AL-SAYYED AL-NAGGAR (IN ARABIC) Egypt is teetering on the brink of financial insolvency. The present situation is particularly threatening; the day of reckoning no longer can be staved off. Nowhere are politics and economics more intertwined than in present-day Egypt.  Over the past year revenue sources have declined significantly, with no respite in sight.

The overall result of government policies under pressure from the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) is intensifying the ongoing massive decline in the living standards of average Egyptians, and further exasperating social tensions under conditions where poverty is already widespread

To shed light on this dire economical situation, Ahmed al-Sayyed al-Naggar maps out an historical account of wealth and poverty in Egypt. (In Arabic)

THE CROSSING OF THE SUEZ CANAL BY - Lt. GENERAL SA`D AL-SHAZLIY -(EPISODES # 35 -43) .  In 1973 the Bar-Lev line looked so steadfast that Moshe Dayan, then minister of defence, claimed that it “would take the American and Soviet engineer corps together to break through it  But on 6 October 1973, it took the Egyptian military only a few hours to break through and overrun the “in-destructible” line.

In the end, the line that had stood up to two years of Egyptian artillery-fire throughout the war of attrition, succumbed to water. British-made high-pressure water cannons used the water of the Suez Canal to dissolve the hardened sand and melt the formidable artificial landscape into pools of mud.

Two days later, 8 October 1973, brought the most bitter defeat in IDF history, when waves of bewildered Israeli soldiers in an armoured counter-offensive broke against a dug-in Egyptian army equipped with previously unknown personal anti-tank missiles. That day, Moshe Dayan proclaimed that the “Third Temple was falling”.
